Explanation of the different Renewable Energy Sources that the agricultural engineer is involved with:


Solar Energy:

  • Photo voltaic energy (to convert solar radiation into electricity)
  • PV fences: For security purposes
  • PV domestic: Lighting, TV, radios, freezers, computers
  • PV water pumps: Provide drinking water for animals or domestic use
  • Solar water heating: Provide hot water for domestic use
  • Solar drying: Drying of grain or vegetables
  • Heating of households
  • Solar cooking: Provide heat for cooking of food

Wind Energy:

  • Conversion of wind energy into electricity for domestic or farming purposes


Hydro Energy:

  • Uses the energy of water to drive water pumps or to generate electricity
  • The water pump or generator could be coupled to the water pump
  • Could only be used where water is available that flows from a high to a lower position

Biogas:

  • Converts animal dung into a flammable gas that could be utilized for cooking, heating, cooling and lighting
  • Flammable gas could be used to generate electricity using a stand alone fuel engine coupled to a generator
  • Odorless effluent could be used as a fertilizer on vegetable gardens and lands

Woodgas

  • Converts wood into a flammable gas that could be used for heating, lighting or to generate electricity using a stand alone fuel engine coupled to a generator
